Gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breasts become much larger than normal, sometimes causing the nipples to become painful and sensitive. Causes
Fluctuating hormones during puberty,is often thought to be a significant contributor to enlarged male breasts. During this time, many boys experience a hormonal imbalance, often causing a predominance of female hormones over male hormones. However, this condition should normalize on its own. If it does not,then it often leads to gynecomastia, and has to be treated with surgery. Other possible causes of gynecomastia include genetics, obesity, and some medications.
Treatment
Gynecomastia is traditionally treated by surgical excision or liposuction. The choice depends on whether the abnormal breast size is the result of excess glandular tissue, or fatty tissue.
If excess glandular tissue is the problem, then excision is the method chosen. Surgery is generally performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and can last from 1 to 3 hours. During the operation, the surgeon will make an incision along the areola, and the tissue is then removed via this opening. In instances where Gynecomastia is the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction is used to remove the surplus tissue.
After surgery
Patients will experience some pain and discomfort after surgery, but the doctor will prescribe pain medication. Full recovery can take up to 4 weeks, and during this time patients are advised to avoid any strenuous exercise. However, patients can resume normal activities 3 to 5 days after surgery.
