Does a Rhinoplasty Hurt?

Are you interested in rhinoplasty, but worried that it might be painful? That’s understandable, because a nose job sounds as if it should hurt, and it’s a concern shared by many people contemplating the procedure. That’s why plastic surgeons are frequently asked – Does a rhinoplasty hurt?

What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is done to reshape or resize the nose, or to correct a functional issue such as a breathing problem. The incisions for surgery are typically made inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty), but there are times when an additional incision is made across the columella (open rhinoplasty). The columella is the tissue between the nostrils.

Does rhinoplasty hurt?
Rhinoplasty is done under general anesthesia, so patients won’t feel any pain during the procedure. While they will feel some discomfort in the days immediately after surgery, rhinoplasty really doesn’t hurt. There is normally some swelling and bruising, but this varies depending on the exact procedure. There will also be some heaviness and pressure in the nasal area.

Patients are advised to use cold compresses, and keep their head elevated as much as possible, to minimize any pain and discomfort. Most of the tell-tale signs of the procedure are gone within a week.

If you’d like to have nose surgery, don’t let fear hold you back from getting the nose you’ve always wanted. Be sure to discuss any concerns you may have about pain and discomfort with your plastic surgeon ahead of time, so that you are comfortable going into the operation.
