How Often Should I Get Chemical Peels?

Are you looking for a quick skin refresher?  Chemical peels are a great option because they can reduce signs of aging and improve complexion issues such as discoloration, wrinkles, and mild scars.  However, multiple peels are needed to get optimal results, so perhaps you would like to know – How often should I get chemical peels?

Refresh Your Skin With A Chemical Peel

Chemical peels rejuvenate the skin by removing the top layer of dead skin cells that make the skin look dull and lackluster.   Once that outer layer is cleared away the skin will look healthier, smoother, and more radiant.

How Often Should I Get Chemical Peels?

There are different types of chemical peels available – light, medium, and deep, so how often you should get a chemical peel will depend on the strength of the peel you are receiving.   The strength of the peel is determined by the chemical used, the concentration level, and how long it’s applied.

Depending on your skin’s response to a specific chemical peel, your dermatologist may suggest a repeat or recommend a different type of peel.   However, there are some general guidelines regarding how often chemical peels should be repeated.

Light peels using glycolic acid or salicylic acid are very gentle and usually require 1-7 days for healing.  These peels can be repeated every 2-3 weeks.

Medium depth peels are frequently done using TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and are more invasive than light peels.  Recovery after a medium peel takes about 7-14 days, so doctors recommend waiting at least 4-6 weeks before getting another one.

Deep chemical peels provide intense exfoliation and require a long healing time, so a deep peel is only recommended once.

If you are thinking about getting a chemical peel its best to visit a board-certified dermatologist to find out if it’s the right choice for your skin.
