Are you thinking about changing the shape or size of your chin? Chin augmentation may be the right procedure for you. The chin is an essential feature of the face, so it’s not surprising that many people that are unhappy with their chin opt to undergo chin augmentation. But what types of chin augmentation exist.
What is chin augmentation?
Chin augmentation or genioplasty is a surgical procedure that is typically performed for cosmetic reasons, to alter the shape or size of the chin. It corrects a recessed or protruding chin and gives the chin a balanced, more attractive appearance.
What types of chin augmentation exist?
Chin implant surgery and sliding genioplasty are the main types of chin augmentation.
Chin implant surgery
Chin enhancement with implants is the most common type of chin augmentation. During surgery a solid silicone implant is inserted above the chin bone via an incision made either in the mouth or under the chin.
Chin implant surgery improves the contours of the chin and jawline, and enhances facial harmony. The chin implant will stay in position once healed, and does not usually need to be replaced.
Sliding genioplasty
Sliding genioplasty is the other type of chin augmentation. It involves moving and repositioning the chin bone. Sliding genioplasty is a surgical technique in which the jaw bone is moved in a specific direction and then secured with wires or screws.
Sliding genioplasty increases the projection and definition of the chin. It is typically recommended for people that are not good candidates for chin implant surgery.
